Elyse, of St. Albans, and Jake, of Fayetteville, met while working at a pharmacy during college. After a whirlwind romance, Jake found the courage to propose 10 months after asking Elyse to be his girlfriend at the overlook of Smokey’s on the Gorge in Fayetteville. In October 2014 on Bridge Day—when parachutists can legally jump off the New River Gorge Bridge—the couple were at the overlook again when Jake popped the question. Immediately after Elyse replied, “Well, yeah!” her two best friends surprised her to celebrate the engagement.
The couple chose Benedict Haid Farm for both the ceremony and the reception. The farm’s lush greenery, picturesque scenery, and rustic charm made it the perfect location. It poured rain all day but the couple didn’t let bad weather get them down. One of the bride’s and groom’s favorite moments was when they exchanged handwritten vows during the ceremony. Elyse chose a champagne-colored dress with woven-style material and completed her look with a flower crown, sandals, and a rose-gold moonstone necklace. The bouquets and the bride’s crown featured overflowing arrangements of burgundy dahlias and eucalyptus. The couple cut into a red velvet cake with cream cheese icing. Guests could treat themselves to cupcakes in red velvet, pumpkin cheesecake, and chocolate flavors. A theme of “adventure” enlivened the space. Tables were decorated with old books, flowers, and globes, while maps, trunks, and antique cameras completed the motif; a sign reading, “Love is meant to be an adventure” greeted guests. A black globe served as an unconventional guestbook on which friends and family could write their names in gold. Food, games, and dancing took place under white tents illuminated by string lights. After a honeymoon to Asheville, North Carolina, the couple lives in Hurricane.
